“When the Future Caught on Fire” the debut album from Toronto’s Chinese Food is a pleasant surprise from a relatively young band. The album breathes youth in both a good and bad way. Catchy melodies and pop sensibility runs through the entire record but is unfortunately the only cohesive element to the bands debut. That’s not to say the album is without gems. The opening song “Red Head Heart” is priceless and “Party at the Kennedy’s” is reminiscent of some outrageous pre-party chatter (and drinking of course). Other notable tracks include “When the Future Caught on Fire” and “Old Man Words” which takes a more serious tone compared to the remainder of the record. Overall a very fun and charismatic debut from a band with a strong potential to break out creatively.
